After a century-long "winter of adversity, the Poles have
entered "a spring of thrilling possibilities," said George Bush last
night, saluting the former Gdansk shipyard electrician who led an
uprising that toppled communist rule in Poland.
"It is said that the character of a people is embodied in its
leaders," Bush told Lech Walesa, making his first state visit abroad
since becoming president of Poland two months ago. "Tonight,
Americans salute you as an apostle of peace throughout the world.
Some leaders reflect their time. Mr. President, you have defined
your time."
