Ethiopian Rebels Step Up Assault In Countryside

Rebels, stepping up pressure on the government of President Mengistu Haile Mariam, have intensified their month-old military campaign in the countryside to the north and west of this capital.

The government has responded by vowing to use every resource to defend its rule, drafting university students for the first time and rejecting any notion of political compromise.

An authoritative government source said Addis Ababa was contemplating imposing a state of emergency.
