Finally, the Alliance Shows Progress; After 30 Years, a New and Healthier Latin American Awareness Emerges
|
THIRTY YEARS ago last Wednesday, John F. Kennedy launched the
Alliance for Progress with a call for Latin America to join a
crusade to end tyranny and poverty under the banner of democratic
capitalism. Kennedy appealed to Latin American countries to "modify
their social patterns so that all, and not just a privileged few,
share in the fruits of growth." And he stressed that "political
freedom must accompany material progress."
The message finally appears to be getting through, with the help
of the collapse of communism in eastern Europe, the East Asian
economic miracle and the 1990 ...
