She may have been a commoner by parentage, but to lovers of dance and millions of others, Dame Margot Fonteyn was as close as nature ever comes to making a born princess. As a ballerina, as a person and in the almost celestial aura of her physical presence, she was an incarnation of royalty, perhaps more so than quite a few who hold that distinction by accident of ancestry.

Of the myriad images of Fonteyn that leap to mind, one seems particularly poignant right now, at the moment of her passing, in Panama City yesterday at the age of 71. It was her entrance - one can only call it ...
