KITARO reminds me of Basho, the 17th century Japanese haiku poet who walked the length and breath of Japan to get inspiration from nature and people for his works.

Kitaro travels the world for the same reason, as well as collect new sounds for his music. He does write poetry, but music is his main focus, he disclosed in a recent phone interview from Taiwan with Buzz.
