Once it was dark we began the search, our spotlight sweeping
the trees as the pickup slowly penetrated the bush. We had left our
lodge in Zambia's South Luangwa National Park late in the afternoon,
following tracks in the sand along the bank of the Luangwa River.
A night game drive is an eerie experience, the green of the
animals' eyes suddenly punctuating the dark. We had already been
lucky: As well as the expected impalas, we had spotted a sleek
lioness, known as Ginger to our guides, basking in the sun on a
sandbar. She had not been seen for some time, and rangers feared she
