In 1364 Duke Rudolf IV, ruler of the duchy of Styria as well as
other Hapsburg domains, gave the answer to the problem of the ages:
Make love, not war. The sentiment was enshrined in a motto exhorting
Austria, while other countries wage war, to marry - winning kingdoms
not through Mars but Venus.
For the most part the maxim worked very well. But from 1453
until 1683, love was not enough for Imperial Austria. The Ottoman
Turks, whose most fierce attacks were led by Suleyman the
Magnificent in the first half of the 16th century, laid siege.
