`Hamlet,' Hulce & the Issue Of Character; What's Left To Bring to the Role? The Actor Finds Out Tonight.

Tom Hulce had already earned his stage spurs in "Equus" when
his Academy Award nomination for 1984's "Amadeus" guaranteed him
movie marquee value as well. His shock-headed, manic Mozart defined
the composer for a popular audience. Now the 38-year-old Hulce - who
passes for a decade younger and sounds two decades wiser - is
following a long line of legends into "Hamlet," which opens tonight
at the Shakespeare Theatre.
