PLANS to build a church in a deprived former pit village could be scuppered by an attempt to declare the proposed site a village green.Methodists in Witton Park, near Bishop Auckland, want to build a church on open land off Low Queen Street.However, some residents living nearby say the site is used as common land and should be protected.They have asked Durham County Council to declare the site a village green - a move that would prevent the church building on it.Resident Norman James said:"The street I live on is called The Green - the land is a village green and everyone knows it."Witton ...
