Theater; The Weightiness Of `The World'

William Congreve's 17th-century satire "The Way of the World,"
which opened last night at Arena Stage, might be called "Les
Liaisons Humoreuses." Upper-class folk in gorgeous costumes scheme
and plot and manipulate about sex and money. The story is famously
complicated - so the Arena production cleverly opens with Congreve's
ghost (scripted by dramaturge Laurence Maslon) appearing to tell
us the setup of who loves whom and who's going to inherit what.
"It's only sex and cash, folks," he closes, "then, as now, the way
of the world."
