One after another we came upon them - a half-dozen little piles of feathers and bits of flesh that, hours before, had been migrating cuckoos, trying to return to the North American mainland. Others, still alive but exhausted and near starvation, clung pathetically to the innermost branches of shrubs, trying to make themselves unnoticeable to the falcons and hawks perched in the treetops watching for the flash of movement that would signal the opportunity for another easy kill and meal.
