Ghost Fleet ships can dock in the North-East - for now

THE first two toxic ships on their way to the North-East will be allowed to dock before being forced to return to the US, the Environment Secretary said last night.

Plans to dismantle the ships have been shelved after the proposal was deemed to flout international rules.

A decision on two other ships has yet to be made.

Margaret Beckett said that the former US Navy ships would be temporarily stored at Hartlepool because it was the safest option.

The move to allow the socalled Ghost Ships to dock in the port was made after talks between Mrs Beckett and US Transportation Secretary Norman Mineta.
