U.S. Airlift of Food To Somalia Expanding;New Flights to Needy Areas Start Today

The United States today announced plans to expand its emergency food airlift in famine-stricken Somalia by flying food on Saturday to the hard-hit town of Baydhabo, where more than 100 people are said to be starving to death each day.

At the same time, the United Nations' special envoy in Somalia, Mohamed Sahnoun, was reported to have characterized the Somalian famine as far worse than even the most dire predictions.

"The disaster is much bigger than we thought," Sahnoun told Visnews and the British Broadcasting Corp. on Thursday in Mogadishu, according to the Reuter news agency in a report ...
