Columbus Controversy

WHEN IT comes to coin issues, Rep. Frank Annunzio (D-Ill.), the
legendary "coin czar" of Capitol Hill, can be tenacious and
unforgiving.
A proud Italian-American from Chicago and the former chairman of
the House Subcommittee on Consumer Affairs and Coinage, Annunzio has
pushed since 1990 for a set of commemorative coins to honor the
500th anniversary of Christopher Columbus's arrival in the New
World. Congress finally approved a set of three coins earlier this
year, but before the final designs were released last week, Annunzio
was pitching for his coins.
