THE popular belief that Ripon is one of England's oldest cities is to be exploded in a book by local historian Maurice Taylor.

He pledges one or two other myths will be shattered when his 35,000-word Illustrated History of Ripon hits the book stands later this year.

The 65-year-old vice-president of Ripon Civic Society and retired headteacher, says the city of Ripon dates back only as far as 1837.

That was the year when Ripon Minster became the cathedral - then the deciding factor in gaining city status.
