Galena rolls on

CAMBRIDGE, Ill. - The first quarter has always been Galena's 12- minute haven, a time when opposing offenses sputter and the Pirates roll.

So when Cambridge surprised everyone and recovered an opening- kickoff squib, the test for top-seeded Galena came earlier than it imagined.

"It was a little scary," Galena quarterback Gavin Kaiser said, "but we bounced back really well."

Thanks to its punishing defense and big-play ability, Galena passed its first trial of adversity in the Class 1A playoffs and responded with a 39-14 quarterfinal victory over Cambridge Saturday afternoon.
