Sir Robert Muldoon, 70, Dies; New Zealand Prime Minister

Sir Robert Muldoon, 70, the strong-willed prime minister who
brought New Zealand into a close alliance with Britain and the
United States, died Aug. 5 in a hospital in Auckland, New Zealand.
The cause of death was not reported, but Mr. Muldoon had suffered
from heart and kidney ailments.
As prime minister from 1975 to 1984, he nurtured alliances with
the Western powers and championed economic reform and the Third
World debt. It was a time of major change for New Zealand, from
relative prosperity on the strength of exports to economic hard
times as world trade markets changed.
