A LIFE remembered: Nieces, nephews, Webster Hose were fire volunteer's family

Volunteer firefighter Edward Burns, who had no children of his own, went above and beyond the call of duty when it came to his nieces and nephews.

"I got my first bike, which he bought me, when I was 8 or 9, and I wrecked it shortly after," recalled a nephew, Jeremiah "Jerry" McGuire of Watertown. "He simply bought me another one. He was very understanding. He was always calm -- well, mostly calm, being a good Irishman."

Burns, who died Jan. 5 at age 92, also was a major prankster. "He was always taking someone's shoes and stuffing tissue or newspaper in the toe so they couldn't get them on," ...
