Public defenders likely to refuse cases in 2008

Private attorneys could be asked to lighten the load
The state Public Defenders Commission has given the green light
for offices to refuse cases when the workload is too high, but
leaders say public defenders likely won't start turning any away
until 2008.
The commission voted without dissent Friday at its meeting in St.
Louis to proceed on two tracks. First, it adopted an internal rule,
which takes effect immediately, setting out when public defender
offices have too many cases and how the process will work.
