A "bizarre" decline in patients needing emergency surgery in Canterbury could lead to more elective operations.

Canterbury District Health Board chief executive Gordon Davies is considering more elective surgeries after what he describes as an unprecedented drop in acute general, cardiothoracic and orthopaedic surgery patients for five consecutive months.

Documents indicate hundreds fewer patients have required emergency surgery in Christchurch hospitals since June.
