It is the first natural landscape in Britain to win the ultimate international accolade - for nowhere else can you walk in time through 180 million years in just 95 miles of stunning coastline.

But the unique qualities of the Jurassic Coast were far from the thoughts of James Scott, Duke of Monmouth, when he landed there to proclaim himself king in 1685.
