Pique work is the name for the technique of inlaying fine silver and gold into tortoiseshell, usually fine wire or studs, and is sometimes also found in ivory. In France it was called "pique d'or" and was invented by Neapolitan jeweller Laurentini circa 1650.

It was an easy and simple method to copy, and was very soon successfully in France, Holland and England. Matthew Boulton was making it in his factory by the 1760s but the best examples were made in France and Italy during the 18th century.
