In 1956, Albert Arnold Gore was a narrow vote away from being nominated vice president on a ticket with Adlai Stevenson. Yesterday, he watched as the son he raised to be president was the announced vice presidential choice of presumptive Democratic nominee Bill Clinton.

Last night the senior Gore talked by phone from his farm in Carthage, Tenn., about the hard choices his son made - perhaps the hardest, Al Jr.'s decision to fight in Vietnam.
