Master's Degrees Quadrupled in Past 3 Decades; More Than Half Given In Education, Business

The number of students receiving master's degrees more than quadrupled in the past 30 years at a time when some careers started requiring a higher degree for advancement, according to the American Council on Education.

More than 320,000 people earned master's degrees in 1990, while fewer than 75,000 received the degrees in 1960, the council said in a 12-page report released today. More than half of the degrees were in education and business, according to the report, which compiled and analyzed data from previously released studies on U.S. master's degrees.
