Commando killed in Afghanistan on final deployment

An army commando killed in Afghanistan was preparing to return home and was months away from leaving the armed forces.

Warrant Officer Class 2 Michael Smith, 39, of 29 Commando Regiment Royal Artillery, based at the Citadel, Plymouth, was killed in a grenade attack on the British military base on Thursday.

He had served for 20 years and his deployment to Afghanistan was due to be his last before joining civilian life.

WO2 Smith, from Liverpool, joined the Army in 1987.
