Row over future of green splits village

It is a rather worn patch of grass at the heart of Britain's most southerly village.

Most would admit that the small green in Lizard is not much to look at and is hardly Plymouth Hoe.

But the tiny triangle of land has become the focal point of a bitter battle which has split neighbours and even families of this close knit community.

The issue to have driven a stake so clearly through the village is whether the green should be paved or remain as a makeshift car park.

"It has slowly festered," said Peter Walker, chairman of Landewednack Parish Council.
