Town's seafaring links with an island far away

It was undoubtedly one of the most important journeys of its time, paving the way for the creation of England's overseas empire. And it brought with it a strong link between two islands 2,000 miles apart across the massive North Atlantic Ocean.

But although the claiming of Newfoundland, an island off the eastern coast of Canada, was a monumental occasion in the history of England, the man who made the claim could only enjoy the achievement for a matter of weeks.
