Thonet's work is proof that quality will always endure

Good designs often continue to be made - but not many are still in production over 100 years later. Michael Thonet's had been experimenting with bending heat treated glued veneers since 1819 and, knowing the wood would spring back on cooling, applied strategic screws.

It was an idea that made him a fortune, and even when his copyright ended in 1869 many rivals were still unable to match the quality of the original piece.
