Former west policeman in chief constable race

A former Devon and Cornwall policeman is understood to be among the applicants to succeed Maria Wallis as Chief Constable.

Dick Crompton, now Deputy Chief Constable of Lincolnshire Police, was formerly an inspector in Torbay and a chief inspector in Plymouth but left the force six years ago to take up a training course at the police college in Hampshire. A former Assistant Chief Constable with Cumbria Constabulary he joined Lincolnshire in August 2004.

Mr Crompton is thought to be among the five senior officers who have applied for the pounds132,000-a-year post vacated by Mrs Wallis in July.
