Was Far East ruler Devon's greatest son?

One of the first nominations for the title of Greatest Ever Devonian is for a man who made a difference many thousands of miles away from the Devon moorland where he is buried.

Sir James Brooke, who is honoured with a plaque at Sheepstor Church near Burrator reservoir on Dartmoor where he is buried, was a colonial soldier, born in 1803 to English parents in India.

His interest in exploring the coast off what is now Malaysia led to him becoming the Rajah of Sarawak - part of modern day Malaysia in the Far East.

Here he ruled for much of his life, before handing over to his nephew Sir Charles ...
