Tacitus and Jesus

We should be very careful about using Tacitus as an authority for the historical Jesus. The passage quoted by correspondent William Most {"That Wasn't Jesus," letters, June 15} is no more than an explanation of the term "Christians" for the Roman readers of Tacitus's "Annals." In other words, Tacitus is explaining why Christians called themselves by that name and is stating what they believed to be the truth rather than what he or his readers regarded as true.
