The Highland supermarket wars entered a new phase yesterday with Asda getting a foothold in Tain and indicating that both Nairn and Culloden are next on a wish-list of sites that includes Inverness and Thurso.

Council backing for the Asda store in Easter Ross came 24 hours after Tesco's bid for a fourth Inverness superstore was rejected.

Officials had recommended refusal of the Tain application, which contravened the Ross and Cromarty East local plan as the site was designated part of a larger area for housing.
