Midge expert forecasts fall in north 'scourge' next year

A Leading midge expert yesterday said lower-than-usual midge numbers this summer could result in a marked reduction in the population next year.

Ali Blackwell, who runs a spin-off company from Edinburgh University developing new methods of insect control, said hot, dry weather during the summer had resulted in a dramatic fall in the midge population. And she pointed out that, if there were fewer insects at the end of the summer, there would be fewer laying eggs for next year.
