Dogged Duo Start Hunt For Isles Bumblebees

Bumblebees have never been regarded as a dog's best friend.

So Quinn the springer spaniel might seem an unlikely saviour for the insects, which are under threat in the Outer Hebrides.

For the next five weeks, former stray Quinn has been drafted in by the Bumblebees Conservation Trust to search for nests in Tiree.

It is hoped his efforts will halt the insects' steady slide towards extinction in the UK.

The project, thought to be the first of its kind in the world, aims to establish how many bumblebees are left and what can be done to protect them.
