Uni at centre of jawbone mystery

Academics in Hull have been called on to unravel a mystery behind an ancient jawbone.

The medical engineering department at the University of Hull has been called on to scan the bone.

Archaeologists believe it may have belonged to the last Neanderthal in the UK.

If proven, it would make the fossil one of the rarest archaeological finds in the country.

The jawbone was discovered alongside animal fossils in Kent's Cavern, just outside Torquay, Cornwall, in 1927.

It was held in a nearby museum as evidence of an early Homo sapien.

But recent techniques have dated it as up to 37,000 years old.
