Safety campaigner forever famous for saving lives at sea

The Plimsoll Line ensures Samuel Plimsoll, the campaigner for safety at sea, is forever famous.

His local connection through his marriage to a daughter of the Hull and Hornsea entrepreneur, Joseph Armytage Wade, is well-known, but Hull features more prominently in his story than I had realised.

A new biography, The Plimsoll Sensation by Nicolette Jones (Little, Brown, pounds20) shows one of his most bitter opponents was Charles Morgan Norwood, shipowner and Hull Liberal MP from 1865 to 1885.

Plimsoll had also become a Liberal MP and was elected for Derby in 1868.
