Handel's `Messiah': An Undisputed Favorite for All Seasons

The 250th anniversary of the world premiere of Handel's
"Messiah" was celebrated a few weeks ago but apparently nobody has
issued a new recording to mark the occasion. We don't really need a
new "Messiah" recording, to be sure; Shaw or Solti will do nicely
for those who like a modern orchestra; Pinnock or McGegan or Hogwood
for those who like old instruments; and there must be at least a
dozen other versions worth noting. But a surfeit of recordings has
never kept the record companies from putting out new versions of old
