Shabbat, August 11
Can we Jews be said to be a visual people? On top of declaring
that music produced by Jewish composers was "sweet and tinkling
without depth," Richard Wagner claimed in "Das Judenthum in der
Musik" (1850) that Jews' sensory capacities did not allow them to
produce visual artists. This attitude was absorbed by Martin Buber,
who in his 1903 book on Jewish artists, "Juedische Kuenstler," wrote:
"The Jew of antiquity was more of an aural being [Ohrenmensch] than a
visual one [Augenmensch] and felt more in terms ...
