A History Lesson from 'the Master'

The current debate about the Winograd Commission's interim report on last summer's Second Lebanon War brings to my mind the comments of one of the masters of political analysis, Joseph de Maistre (1753- 1821). Initially a supporter of the French Revolution, de Maistre became one of its most bitter critics, leaving for exile when the new French Republic invaded his native Savoy in 1792. He fled first to Lausanne, then to Venice and then the Piedmont, finally reaching St. Petersburg, where he was the representative of the Sardinian king from 1802-1817.
