Two seemingly very disparate themes dominate Rosh Hashanah and, although neither of them has any explicit foundation in the Bible, the way the rabbis of the Talmudic period connected them tells us much about the profound spiritual dynamic the holiday has had ever since.

One theme is creation. As the prayer book puts it, "Today is the birthday of the world." Here it is essential to remember that in the ancient context, creation relates more to governance than to cosmology. A god's act of creation testifies to his sovereignty and his supremacy, ...
