Chinese Region Pursues Tourism of Special Sort; Historic Yanan Seeks to Instill Spartan Fervor

This spiritual home of the Chinese revolution, the cave-rimmed
northern town where Mao Zedong settled the ragged remnants of his
epic Long March more than half a century ago, is witnessing its
biggest visitor boom since the turbulent 1966-76 Cultural
Revolution.
Those coming here are not foreign tourists, however, but
functionaries and students whom the government is sending to embue
them with the sense of dedication that Mao instilled in his
followers when they were living in these caves.
