IT looks, from the surviving 1962 snapshot, like a faintly uncomfortable encounter, but the two musicians found another common language and shared interest in football - the respective merits of Moscow Dynamo and Glasgow Rangers. Meanwhile the poet - in attendance, although absent from the above picture - seemed to bask shyly in the presence of a modern cultural hero. The three men, gathered in the George Hotel during the 1962 Edinburgh Festival, were Hugh MacDiarmid, pianist and composer Ronald Stevenson and the 56- year-old Russian composer Dmitri Dmitriyevich Shostakovich.
