1 This year's six Nobel Prizes were presented on Friday, at ceremonies in Stockholm and Oslo. And the winners included . . . Kenyan environmental campaigner Wangari Maathi (Peace), and Austrian novelist Elfriede Jelinek (Literature).

2 The 2004 Nobel laureates for Medicine, Physics, Chemistry and Economics were all partnerships: a total of nine men and one woman took half or third shares in a prize.

3 The Nobel Prizes were established in 1901, as decreed in the will of the Swedish scientist Alfred Nobel, who died in 1896.
