As a child on visits to his grandmother's home in Bangladesh,
Akram Khan used to climb up a tree in the courtyard and hang from a
branch upside-down, thoughts dripping out of his head on to the
ground below. His nine-year-old mind was whirling with questions and
ideas. Sometimes he would climb down and press his ear to the soil.
If he listened hard enough, he imagined, the earth might answer his
questions. It would speak back to him. "Of course, it never did," he
says now, sitting in a hotel in Copenhagen. "On stage I say that it
did, but it never actually did."
