Artists stump up for statue to unknown poet

A FORGOTTEN poet who inspired Robert Burns to write in Scots is to have a statue unveiled in his honour in Edinburgh.

Some of Scotland's best-known arts figures have donated privately to a fund to have a life-size bronze sculpture of Robert Fergusson erected in the city's historic Royal Mile.

Following revelations in the Sunday Herald last year that a three- year fundraising bid to have the poet recognised in his home city had stalled because no one knew who he was, a flood of donations poured in.
