'Henceforth, no one has the right to spell at will.'

So said Mahatma Gandhi in his preface to Sarth Jodni Kosh, an authoritative
dictionary of Gujarati spellings, in 1929.

Decades later, like his core ideology of non-violence and truth, Gandhi's
obstinate preference for Gujarati spellings has also been seriously
challenged in his birthplace.

In the 19th and early 20th century, anarchy prevailed in Gujarati
spellings. Gandhi, who was an accomplished Gujarati writer, used his moral
authority to standardize the spellings.
