Isaac Bashevis Singer, who died on July 24, 1991, at age 87, was a towering
figure in Yiddish literature and probably the greatest storyteller in any
language in the 20th century. His unique genius was acknowledged in 1978
when he was awarded the Nobel Prize for literature, the first Yiddish
writer to be so honored. Novelist Dora Horn writes that "with the possible
exception of Sholem Aleichem, Isaac Bashevis Singer is the most widely
known Yiddish writer to ever have walked on the face of the earth."
