According to a recent report released by the Commerce Department's Minority
Business Development Agency (MBDA), securing financing is the number one
challenge facing the minority business community.

The report, "Expanding Financing Opportunities for Minority Businesses,"
identifies several barriers minorities encounter when seeking financing.

The report finds that minority firms need extensive mentoring and technical
assistance services in addition to financing. This need often causes many
banks to raise the expense of making a loan, eliminating minorities'
