It was one of Louis XIV favorite gardens at his vast palace of Versailles, a gently sloping grove the size of two football fields, opulently adorned with bronze and marble and three mammoth fountains.

The splendor of Le Bosquet des Trois Fontaines, one of the great landscape achievements of the 17th century, made it that much harder to maintain, and the much-admired garden fell into utter ruin as history _ the French revolution and two World Wars _ took its toll on Versailles.
