UNITED NATIONS, May 17 (Xinhua) -- United Nations Secretary- General
Kofi Annan on Monday called on the international community, particularly
the rich nations, to show sustained support for the UN peacekeeping cause
by contributing more troops and other resources. Addressing a Security
Council open debate, Annan said the United Nations currently has 53,000
troops, military observers and civilian police serving in 15 peacekeeping
missions around the world -- the highest number of personnel since 1995.
